Low Maintenance Landscaping Ideas

With the economy struggling and many doing their best but not being able to afford luxurious gardens, there are ways in which you can have a wonderful looking garden and landscape without spending too much money. Low maintenance landscaping ideas are everywhere and such ideas can save you a great deal of time and money. One way to have a lovely landscape ideas for slopes without spending too much time and money is by planting perennials. This will avoid replanting and replacing flowers. And, if you lower the amount of flowers you plant you can reduce insect and fungus problems.

Before the landscaping and gardening, do some research on your climate and soil conditions—in relation to the type and quantity of plants you want to grow. Some plants do not work well in certain climates and soils, so it is best to always check this out before beginning. Mulching will save you a great deal of time when weeding and hoeing. And, mulching also reduces the amount of water most plants need. Mulching also adds nutrients to the ground that makes you plants grow healthy and strong.

Low maintenance landscaping ideas are gaining in popularity with many homeowners these days. Another landscaping idea is using ground covers such as moss, clover or pea gravel. They can be used instead of flower beds, grass or patches of lawn. This will lower your watering needs and will prevent weeds and take away the need to fertilize.

It has been noted that if you reduce the amount of grass by replacing it with a different ground cover, it will cut back on the mowing, fertilizer and irrigation. And when you design your landscape, plant your flowers in groups—those who have the same watering and sun needs. And, think about expanding your patio or deck into a more functioning outdoor space—a space where you can spend more time with family and friends. This can be done by expanding these areas with a cement pad or compacted gravel area. Another way to keep landscaping easier is to install smart irrigation controllers or soil moisture censors. These items can be installed easily and lessen the maintenance for the homeowner.

Low maintenance landscaping ideas are being used by many homeowners. Another way to simplify a landscape and still have beauty is to design a rock garden. Rock gardens work great especially in shady spots or areas where drought often occurs. Still another way to keep your maintenance low is to design a vegetable garden. Choose a spot close to your home or use what you have available inside your patio. A vegetable garden not only adds color and design to landscape but also provides fresh produce and at a lower cost.

In addition, paved areas such as walkways and other surfaces reduce the time and effort you spend on your landscape. The more patio or footpaths you have, the less time and effort you have to put into the landscaping work. To further reduce your maintenance give some thought to using ground cover such as mondo grass, juniper cover or Algerian Ivy. These covers look beautifully, are low maintenance and are a great replacement of flowers—which require weeding and watering. Put them around trees and that will save you mowing problems.
