Finding the Right Heating System

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning - HVAC

When heating a home, there are many different kinds of heating systems such as oil heating systems to choose from. It is important to find the right heating system for one's home, because it will ensure a winter of comfort and relaxation; this is especially important if one lives in the north, where the winters can be very long, drawn-out affairs. A failed heating system during one of those could be bad enough to drive one from the home altogether. The main types of heating systems in use are the wood-burning fireplace, the central heating furnace, the local electrical heat, and the Hydronic, or Hot Water Heating system. These all have many pros and cons, as all use different methods of heating the home. Still, all have proven very good in some places and very bad in others, so doing a fair bit of research before choosing is a must.

A wood-burning fireplace is beneficial mostly for its aesthetic purposes. It both looks and sounds great, and can make any room look cozy and comforting. It also produces a lot of heat directly at the source, so one can be warmed up very quickly if one goes close to the fire. Virtually any type of wood can be used in it, so fuel sources are abundant. A central heating furnace is excellent because the furnace is unobtrusive, hidden off in a back room where it burns up fuel and pumps the heat through ducts to the rest of the home. This is environmentally friendly and provides a lot of heat that can be pumped out quickly when needed. It also heats an entire home quite well, with the distribution system. A local electric heating system uses separate baseboard heaters in each room that use the home's electricity to create heat. These are nice because one can heat only the rooms that are being used, that are occupied, and not have to heat the whole house if other rooms are empty. Hydronic heating uses a water boiler to heat water up to an extreme temperature, much like a furnace. This water is then pumped in pipes through the walls and the floor to proved heat wherever it is needed. The main benefits of this is that the system is very quiet, with just water moving and no sound of fans, and that it warms up cold linoleum floors exceptionally well.

The main reason to repair or replace a fireplace is because the chimney, which has to be cleaned often, has become clogged. Also, the vents and the glass of the door are fragile, and could break with use. A central furnace usually has to be replace because it has not been maintained during the year, and it has broken due to dirt buildup or a breakage in one of the moving parts. Local electric heaters are often tripped on or hit with things at floor level, and become damaged that way. The hydronic system has the disadvantage of using water, and can leak either at the boiler or in the pipes that are within the walls.
