Home Air Conditioning Types
There are several types of home air conditioning units. A whole house unit, sometimes referred to as central air is installed using the homes existing heating duct work and delivers cold air to all rooms of the house. These whole house units normally reside outside the home and are concealed by small fences or shrubbery, as not to draw attention to them. A window air conditioning until would be installed in a accessible window, and would cool the room it was installed in. It may be possible to cool an area larger than one room with a window air conditioning depending on the size and power of the unit and the home's layout or airflow. Portable air conditioning units are also available that can be taken from room to room as needed. Portable units need not be vented like central air or window air conditioning units, and are generally fairly pricey.
Why Have an Air Conditioner?
In addition to cooling down a home during hot weather, air conditioning efficiency also reduce moisture from the air. Most units also filter the air passing through the machine, removing dust, dirt, pollen and other impurities. The reduction of these impurities in the air, as well as removal of additional moisture from the air can make it much easier for people with allergies, asthma and other breathing conditions to breath easily. Air conditioning can make a huge improvement in the comfort of seniors during hot weather months. Many individuals also sleep better if the ambient room temperature is relatively cold, as opposed to too warm.
How long will your Air Conditioning Unit Last?
The answer to this question varies widely, depending on the quality of the model purchased and how well it was cared for. Filters should be cleaned or replaced often to prevent them from gumming up with impurities, which would make it hard for clean air to pass through. Outdoor whole house units should be covered to prevent debry or damage from the elements. Windows air conditioning units should have the outside portion covered during months when it is not used, or removed from the window altogether and kept stored in a safe dry place. Portable air conditioning units should be covered and kept in a safe dry place as well when not in use to get the longest life of such machines. Units that are stored improperly, or do not have filters changed on a regular basis are much more likely to stop functioning or need repairs than units that have been properly taken care of. If you keep your unit clean, change filters often, store and use the units properly, you can expect many years of use out of your air conditioning unit.
