The Basics of Roofing
Roofing is tremendously important to the structure and integrity of a home or building, and choosing quality roofing is the single best way to protect one's home against the elements. Rain, sun, snow, and hail all take their toll on buildings every day, and it is the roof that keeps this from being a disaster. There are different kinds of roofing, from wood to shingles to corrugated metal to tile, and they have all been tested over time in different environments.
Different Styles of Roofing
Wood roofing is one of the oldest styles, as wood shingles have been fashioned out of trees for centuries. There are natural oils in wood that help to keep away the rain and other elements, though these diminish over time once the wood has been cut down and made into shingles. These are used often for their looks, as they give the feel of the Old World, of Europe centuries past, that some people are very fond of. In the United States, fiberglass-based asphalt shingles are the most common, the kind seen on the majority of homes. These replaced paper-based asphalt shingles, which are flammable and somewhat dangerous because of it. These are strong and yet somewhat pliable; they can be manipulated and cut, but also won't fall apart in the wind. Corrugated metal roofing is common on industrial buildings, as it is very durable and can be painted whatever color is desired. Huge sheets of it can be fitted together to cover the vast expanses of warehouses and the like. Tile roofing is used in places with few trees, and is very good at keeping off the rain or snow as it will never rot.
Maintenance and Upkeep
Wood shingles must be replaced when they rot. They also must be finished in order to last as long as possible. Fiberglass-based asphalt shingles must also be replaced, especially after times of high wind. The paper beneath them may have to be replaced in some cases. With both, repair to the roof can be done by replacing multiple shingles, but nothing can be done to repair individual shingles. Corrugated metal roofing will at times need to be repainted, and may need to be fixed along the edges, where it can come loose. Tile roofing will shatter if tree limbs fall on it, and whole sections of tile may need to be replaced. The lines between the tiles may also need to be filled to stop leaks.
Problems and Solutions
The main problem with wood shingles is that they will rot. Fiberglass-based asphalt shingles will tear and rip off of a house. Tiles will break if something strikes them, and are fairly brittle also in the winter with the cold. Corrugated metal roofing can come loose at the edges and bend if struck. In all these cases you need a roof repair, most times the best solution is to replace sections of the roof. Metal roofing can be patched, but the best thing for shingles is replacement, as there is little to be done for individual shingles. They can, however, be replaced in patches, which saves from having to do the entire roof.
