The Benefits of Metal Roofing

Roofing Installation and Repair

Metal roofing is used in so many parts of the world due to its durability, its versatility and its ability to be, practically, maintenance free. The benefits of using metal instead of other materials when building a roof are limitless. Here are some great benefits:

  • Durable
  • Versatile
  • Portable
  • Lightweight
  • Weather Capable- stands up against hurricanes, earthquakes, hail, and wind and even sheds snow from it during the wintertime
  • Fire/Spark Resistant
  • Energy Efficient
  • Labor Efficient- You will not spend so much time installing the metal and even less time taking care of it years after
  • Longer life than most other materials used for roofing, fewer damages incur

With the right underlayment, it can prevent leaking Metal is naturally reflective, but with other treatments it can become more so which means that it will reflect the heat of the sun. In return, energy costs come down and a person’s home or business can stay much cooler during the summer time.

Due to its long life, metal roof installation does not need replacement as often as other materials and can last up to forty years. Metal roofing is been dated back to the ancient year of 960 B.C. when the Temple of Jesus was being built. The temple was equipped with a copper roof, soon after metal became popular in the Virgin Islands. Metal itself became increasingly popular after that time, it even replaced the used of clay tiles that many homes used for their roofs. Many people fell in love with the idea of metal roofing because it stood up against many harsh conditions such as fire, earthquakes, and tropical hurricanes. It also became popular because those from the Islands were able to devise a system that helped bring in water by use of metal. Rainwater would roll off the metal allowing those from the Island to catch it and store it. Metal is seen in large mass amounts in places that have many hurricanes and earthquakes around the world.

Through America, residential metal roofing became the component that opened its doors during its first years. The reasons to choose metal for the roof stands in the fact that it is one of the most durable materials a person can use. In today’s world, we are seeing far worse weather conditions. The winters keep getting colder, the summers are hotter and hurricanes/earthquakes are spiraling out of control. Metal roofing is a great option because it is one of the best materials that hold up so well to all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Typically, sheet metal is used as a roofing option for many homes and buildings. It can last forty years and sometimes even longer than that. With the right galvanic protection and coatings that metal itself needs, it can last up to a hundred years if treated well. One of the many great things about sheet metal for roofs is that it does not just come in silver or even just in white. In today’s more modern world, you can find metal in many different colors, which offers more of a personal selection for homeowners and businesses.

Different types

Corrugated Galvanized Steel- uses wrought steel/iron that is Zinc-coated, which is formed into corrugated sheets of metal.

Aluminum- is one of the strongest and most expensive metals, though it stands up against corrosion, is lightweight and has very high reflectivity.

Copper-Copper is generally used in small areas such as entry ways it can be very expensive

Stainless Steel-Typically used on buildings, it is best used in places that have very harsh weather conditions because of its ability to stand up to them

Green Metal Roofing

In the world we live in today, it seems like everywhere you look someone is changing something to go green. It can be anything from a simple household cleaner to using a cloth bag when shopping to even using metal for roofing. Metal used to make roofs is made by recycling steel. Since the green movement is all about reusing and recycling, this alone should make green activists a little happier about the use of metal. That is not it however, due to the fact that metal lasts longer, and less is shipped off to the landfills, which is even better. Of course above all, metal used for roofs leads to the use of less energy, it is a win-win situation.
