Roof Contractors

Roofing Installation and Repair

When you cannot repair your roof, or you need a new roof installed, roof contractors can make you look good. While some people prefer the “do it yourself” mode, for some things a professional will bring peace of mind. You certainly don’t want to do your roof as a first time learning experience.

Materials used in roofing

Professional roof contractors use a variety of materials including metal, shingle, and “tar and gravel” systems. The traditional favorite for most home and applications has been the shingle roof. The tile roof will always be a iconic image of residential housing, but the newer look of the cedar shake roof has become quite popular. Although wood shingle roofs fell out of popularity for fire safety reasons, the fiberglass and asphalt "look a like" products today actually appear just as nice or even better. Tar and gravel roofs have been a standard model for flat roof commercial buildings.

Metal roofing has been taking great portions of the popular market for both residential and commercial buildings. Metal roofs include the wide panel 9 inch ribbed versions and the nicer-looking “standing seam” types. Where metal once only had an application in agriculture, painted metal roofs have become a rage in new construction and remodeling.

Benefits of roofing types

While roofing contractor may have their personal preferences for which style they like install, consider the values of each type. First, flat roofs only will work with a tar and gravel covering. They may only last a few years and need to be replaced often. Neither shingle nor metal panels will work on a slope-less roof.

Shingle roofs have a natural look to them, keep water out effectively, are easy to repair if damaged, and last for many decades if the roof has been vented properly. High-wind and high-heat areas kill shingle roofs quickly, however.

Metal roofs work well to keep out water, provide an added resilience against wind, and have a 40 year warranty. Those in snowy areas may need braces at the eave of the roof to prevent accumulated snow or ice from sliding off. For a home, this could damage landscaping and vehicles. For a business this could become a huge liability.

Common reasons to hire roofing contractors

If your shingle roof has been around for over 20 years, you may need to start looking for some good roof contractors. You may also keep a good roofer’s number handy in the case of storm damage or high winds. The sooner a roof gets repaired, the less damage you will have to fix inside. Even a slowly leaking roof can cause mildew and mold problems which will hurt not only a structure, but also the occupants’ health.

If you have just installed new siding or a recent addition to your home, consider hiring roof contractors to make the whole structure look brand new. Consider the many colors of metal roof to complement your home’s color. Or choose your favorite earth tone blend for a shingle roof.
