Siding Installation

Painting vinyl siding can be an excellent way to change the appearance of your home. It can also help hide fading that the sun can cause on vinyl siding. It will hide any damage and leave you with a fresh new look. It is possible to paint vinyl and end up with a great finished project if you take the time to do a few required steps along the way.

You will face many vinyl siding problems with your vinyl siding. The first challenge in painting vinyl siding is to pick the correct shade and type of paint. Vinyl siding is made out of PVC. It is a type of plastic that expands and contracts from the heat and cold. This not only happens during the change of seasons but also in changes during the day. The sun, shade, and nightfall will all cause the vinyl siding to contract and expand. Traditional paints will not work on this surface because they are not flexible enough. You need to buy a high grade acrylic latex paint. Look on the label to make sure it is one with urethane and acrylic resins. This type of paint will have the stretch to it that is needed. It will also have great adhesive qualities. Pick a color that is the same shade or lighter then the original color. Do not go darker. When the siding was made it was formulated to withstand heat according to the color. A darker color will absorb more heat then the siding is made for. Overheating can cause vinyl siding to distort and buckle. Lighter colors will collect less heat.

When painting vinyl siding start with a clean surface. If you have a lot of dirt on the siding a pressure washer may be needed. If you don't want to actually purchase one they can be rented. If there are any signs of mildew a mild bleach solution will help. Be sure to rinse well with water afterwards. If the dirt is not to bad, just water will be enough. Paint will stick much better to a clean surface.

The time of day is very important when painting vinyl siding. Do not paint in direct sunlight. Overcast days are best for paint to dry in. If possible choose a cooler time of year. Perfect conditions for paint to dry and bond are cooler, overcast days. Two coats of paint will help prevent peeling and fading.
